Virg, I recommend you look at one of our case studies on the Excellence Gateway: Genius IT helpdesk.
This arises from Weston College where students are benefitting from a unique opportunity to run their own IT helpdesk within the library, providing assistance for students and staff on IT related issues. They will be able to provide an insight on the points you raise.

Subject: Student Helpers - advice needed
Colleagues
On this sunny Friday afternoon in Somerset my thoughts are turning to September (yes, sad but true...) and my plans to potentially introduce Student Helpers into the Library at College.
I would like to ask the list if any of you have done this already and can give some useful pointers - for example, I am keen to get some ideas on the following:
* Writing a job description - what sort of jobs did you feel they could do?
* Interviews - who did you involve and how formal were they?
* Payment or payment in kind - what did/do you do to entice/enthuse applicants?
* How long did/do you 'employ' them for - how many hours a week?
* How many did/do you use?
Any help gratefully received on this - I am happy to summarise for the list.
Best wishes
Virginia
