Hi folks,
I just wanted to draw your attention to a new post on our blog. It's by a service user and discusses, very interestingly I think, the long-term and complicated legacy of being labelled bipolar. Here is the link. Be very interested in comments etc.

General jackboot of the Church. Psychoanalytic formulation more fun. Certainly with Kiekergaard. Spinoza an early Beckian (Beckite?) perhaps?

The original question came from my daughter doing an English PhD @ Lancaster. There is a huge amount of material psychologizing literature and authors (my favourite is an alienist's diagnosis of Zola as a mono-maniacal pervert due to his brilliant description of smells in Nana) but very little on philosophy. Assuming, for example, that Kiekergaard's theistic philosophy was a problem for him (could have been worse, he might have been Spinoza) I wonder what a problem formulation would like like? C

Psychology of philosophy. Phrasing has stayed with me. Usually the other way round (and there are plenty of refs to follow up on that)
On the reverse of your question Thomas Metzinger is quite interesting (in so far as I’ve actually read him which is not v much). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Metzinger

What is it to have a mind?
What gives our lives meaning and value?
Clinicians touch on these questions daily in their work with patients, drawing on psychological models of human nature and development. But they have also been among the central questions of philosophy from Plato and Aristotle to the present day. This third series of interdisciplinary seminars aims to bring together prominent, philosophers, clinicians and others with a view to deepening our understanding of these fundamental questions.
Book now<https://www3.tavistockandportman.ac.uk/CPDApplication/ApplicationForm.aspx?Ref=2130>
The series will also be an opportunity to explore the common ground between psychoanalysis and philosophy, both by exposing clinicians to the way philosophers think about issues relevant for them, and by enabling philosophers to see how their theories might be put to use in actual work with patients. With both disciplines passionately committed to understanding something of the truth about human nature and human living, we hope the series will be a stimulating and enlightening exchange and a creative forum for the development of new ideas and understanding. The series is equally suited to clinicians (including those seeking Continuing Professional Development), to philosophers (including graduate students in philosophy), and to trainees.
Structure
Each seminar will last two hours (7-9pm) and consist of a paper presentation (45 mins) followed by a discussant response (15 mins). There will then follow a chaired discussion with questions and contributions from the floor. Whenever the paper is presented by a philosopher, the response will be from a clinician and vice versa. All of our speakers are well respected in their own field, but all have been asked to make sure they present their ideas in a way that is accessible not only to fellow specialists, but to a mixed clinical and academic audience from a range of disciplinary backgrounds.
