Hi Katy,

Discussing how to balance science outreach activities with being a research scientist is one of the recurring topics of the SpotOn events. I don't know whether you also saw the #reachingoutsci series we organised last year? We hosted a discussion at one of the monthly SpotOn NYC events about whether scientists should be reaching out of the ivory tower and ran a series of guest posts to coincide with the event. Many other science bloggers joined in on their own blogs and we summarised all the posts here: http://www.nature.com/spoton/2012/06/summary-of-the-reachingoutsci-series/

If you wanted to catch up on the discussion from the session itself in NYC, the Storify and video archive from the event is here: http://www.nature.com/spoton/2012/06/junes-sonyc-reaching-out-of-the-ivory-tower-sonyc-reachingoutsci/

Heather's already pointed out the related conversation that took place at SpotOn London in November - thanks Heather! :)

Finally, continuing the #reachingoutsci theme, in a couple of weeks on the SpotOn site we're going to be sharing case studies of scientists and science communicators successfully using social media for science outreach projects. We know that social media use can often be met with confusion or even disapproval, so the aim of the series is to create a useful resource to draw upon when discussing this topic with others. Each contributor will answer the same set of questions to make each case study easy to compare to the others. More details here: http://www.nature.com/spoton/2013/03/share-your-experiences-to-create-some-spoton-social-media-tips-for-scientists/

If anyone would like to contribute their own case study, do get in touch ([log in to unmask]). The more varied contributions we have, the more valuable this becomes as a resource.

Other suggestions for discussion topics are always welcome too!

Lou

Hi Katy,

Just for your information (and others on the list) you can watch the full session and see other outcomes/blogs/reactions from this conference session at - http://www.nature.com/spoton/event/spoton-london-2012-juggling-jobs-balancing-a-research-career-with-scicomm-is-it-a-policy-issue/ (video and links to blogs and outcomes on the right hand side of the page)

The session discussed some challenges of balancing time and also covered ways in which universities are recognising peoples time involvement in public engagement.

I was one of the co-organisers of the session, and I am quite sure most (if not all) the panellists are on the psci-com mailing list

I wasn't sure from your email if you were asking for positive experiences from science communicators about balancing time (if so there are some covered in the session) or if being a science communicator makes you a non-scientist.

Heather

Has anyone read this article?

http://www.nature.com/spoton/2012/11/spoton-london-2012-my-not-so-secret-anymore-double-life-juggling-research-and-science-communication/

Having heard similar experiences from others I’d really like to hear some positive experience from science communicators. In a workshop recently I was asked by a child ‘Are you a proper scientist?’ which certainly got me thinking. I aim to enthuse and engage young people in science and science learning but I feel heartily depressed to think that any deviation from solid lab-based research is universally scorned.

What do others think?
