A Researcher 1A is required, with a social science or public health background and training and experience in qualitative research, to contribute to a Chief Scientist Office funded project, while gaining postgraduate research experience in the School of Health and Life Sciences/ Institute for Applied Health Research at Glasgow Caledonian University.
The successful applicant will work on a project exploring how prevailing constructions of masculinity in the most socio-economically deprived areas of Scotland are related to sexual health attitudes and behaviours in adult heterosexual men; and whether/how these are related to adverse sexual, physical or mental health outcomes for men, their sexual contacts and partners, and other women.
The main purpose of the post will be to plan and undertake the qualitative fieldwork and analysis, which will include negotiating access to community settings across areas of high deprivation for recruitment of the target populations, organising and moderating focus groups (17-22), arranging and conducting individual interviews (around n=40) coding and analysing data. Data collection will occur with men age 18-40 years, and will also include interviews and focus groups with women. Some travel will be required to the study sites across Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Inverness.
Key requirements for this role are a PhD in a social science or public health discipline or equivalent research experience, together with a proven ability to analyse qualitative data. Experience of research recruitment in community settings is essential with experience of conducting research on sensitive topics desirable. Excellent communication, organisational and time management skills are required. Experience of using qualitative analysis software (e.g. NVivo) will be advantageous. The post is 1.0 FTE for 18 months, commencing 1st September 2013.
