Hello

Have any of you come across a recognised standard for documenting data and the relationships between data? Effectively what we are looking for is for a method to document semantics so that when we are looking at the data again in, say , 10 years from now this data will mean something to us.

Many thanks

Birgit

Hi,

In the world of social science every data archive in the world uses the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI). This is the de facto standard for describing data in a robust way. It lends itself to all data, particularly at the study level and we have used it to describe environment and medical data.

Hello Birgit,

Have you spoken to Anna Clements at St.Andrews?

I am not sure if it is what you are looking for but we are involved in a project related to datasets and we drafted an xml metadata specification which is currently with EuroCRIS pending a final official version (hopefully due this summer).

Hi

In OAIS terms I guess you mean Representation Information, which OAIS breaks down into structure (e.g. format etc), semantics (ontologies, dictionaries etc) and other (a catch-all term including software, emulators etc).

There are a couple of issues to note (1) much scientific data is encoded in a specialised way - not standardised and (2) even where a standard is used e.g. FITS in astronomy, one needs a lot more information to be able to deal with the data in detail.

A number of techniques are available to describe some types of data down to the bit level e.g. DRB, EAST, etc but there are so many different types of data that no one standard/tool does everything. There are also a number of ways of capturing semantics - one of the recent APARSEN publications on understandability and usability may be useful - see http://www.alliancepermanentaccess.org/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2013/03/APARSEN-REP-D25_1-01-1_7.pdf

The CASPAR (www.casparpreserves.eu<http://www.casparpreserves.eu> ) project did a lot of work on this - the documents are also available on the APA/APARSEN web site (www.alliancepermanentaccess.org<http://www.alliancepermanentaccess.org> ) - and the SCIDIP-ES (www.scidip-es.eu<http://www.scidip-es.eu> ) project is carrying on that work.

APARSEN is also collecting together standards to be published in an organised way soon.

If you want more details please contact me.

Regards

..David
