Centre of the Cell is the first science education centre in the world to be located within medical research laboratories. The Centre is located in Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets, East London.
We are seeking a General Manager for Centre of the Cell. The overall purpose of the post is to ensure that Centre of the Cell runs smoothly and delivers a high quality experience for visitors to the Centre of the Cell 'Pod' and for outreach participants in schools and other settings. The post holder is required to oversee Centre of the Cell's operations, governance and financial systems to ensure that the project complies with current legislation and operates safely and to a high standard. The post holder will play a key role in managing the delivery of Centre of the Cell's long-term sustainability as a profitable enterprise. The role requires the delivery of revenue income to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project through charging and retail. The post holder will also be tasked with reporting on financial and governance matters to the Trustees and their Financial Subcommittee, FinCo, and to Queen Mary, University of London.
The post holder will have a degree or considerable relevant experience of working at a public facing visitor centre and / or outreach project. Candidates must have experience of office systems including financial records and reports and of planning and coordinating meetings and committees. Other essential requirements include thorough knowledge and understanding of work practices related to office management and finance including Sage 50, and proven analytical and problem-solving capability. The successful candidate will be well organised and have the ability to meet deadlines, with proven communication and interpersonal skills. Finally it is essential that the post holder is willing to be flexible on hours of work on a regular basis.
The post is full time for 12 months initially starting as soon as possible. Starting salary will be in the range £34,283 - £35,221 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
