*CANADA RESEARCH CHAIRS (3) TIER 2, EMILY CARR UNIVERSITY OF ART + DESIGN*

Founded in 1925, Emily Carr University of Art + Design is a centre for
innovation in art and design research and education, and is one of four
Canadian institutions dedicated to the education of artists, designers, and
media practitioners. Over the past decade, Emily Carr has grown its
undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and has developed research
facilities and programs across a broad range of fields, including Social
and Environmental Sustainability, Stereoscopic/3-D Film, Digital and Social
Media, Wearable Computing, Health Design, and Materials and Fabrication
Research. This spring, the University announced plans for the construction
of a new campus on the Great Northern Way site in Vancouver. The new Emily
Carr campus (http://www.ecuad.ca/gnwcampus), set to be completed in 2016,
will further support our vision of a multidisciplinary research and
teaching environment where students, faculty, community members and
industry partners work within a project-based curriculum that addresses the
changing landscape of education and of the cultural and creative industries.

In this context, Emily Carr University is inviting applications for three
Canada Research Chairs (Tier 2) in the following areas of expertise:

*1. Aboriginal Studies/Social and Cultural Practice: *The values of
citizenship and community are central to our teaching and research practice
at Emily Carr. We believe in the importance of promoting critical cultural
awareness, engagement with our wider communities, social and environmental
sustainability, and social justice as core elements of our teaching and
research practice. We are particularly interested in how valuing and
respecting Indigenous perspectives and methodologies can translate into
innovative pedagogy across our curriculum and programs. The ideal candidate
for this position will hold a PhD in aboriginal studies or a related field
within art, media and/or design. They will value a generalized,
transdisciplinary approach to indigenous studies and pedagogy, and will be
equally fluent in academic discourse and studio practice and in balancing
conceptual, aesthetic and research demands. Candidates should have a proven
and established research practice, and should remain open to engaging with
a range of new and existing community and industry-partnered projects.
Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Aboriginal ancestry.

*2. Digital Media/Moving Image: *Dynamic Media at Emily Carr includes
programs in Interactive + Social Media, Animation, and Film, Video +
Integrated Media, and active research initiatives in a wide range of
interdisciplinary media fields, including robotics, mobile apps, social
media platforms, interactive sound and video, interactive wearables, and
documentary and 3-D stereoscopic film. All of these programs and
initiatives are engaged in exploring the social, economic, political, and
cultural context of emerging media. The ideal candidate for this position
will hold a PhD in a media related field with core interests in speculative
design, culture, and emerging media forms. The candidate should have a
hands-on, critical engagement with technology and culture across a range of
fields that may include but aren’t limited to film, data visualization,
animation, interactive and performance art, social media, or public art,
and interests in participatory practice in its many forms. Candidates
should have a proven and established research practice, and should remain
open to engaging with a range of new and existing community and
industry-partnered projects.

3. *Transdisciplinary/Multidisciplinary Design Research: *Design at Emily
Carr includes programs in Interaction Design, Industrial Design, and
Communication Design. These programs have shared values and goals in areas
of collaboration, sustainability, interdisciplinarity, technological
engagement, the development of new research methods and approaches to
design, and the creation of imaginative and provocative work within – and
with attention to – a broader cultural context. The ideal candidate for
this position will hold a PhD in a design or design-related field, and will
value a generalized, transdisciplinary approach to design with a broad
understanding of human-centered, participatory design methodologies.
Candidates should be comfortable researching and conceptualizing in all
three program areas in Design, and they should be equally fluent in design
discourse and studio practice and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic
and technical demands of the discipline. Candidates should have a proven
and established research practice, and should remain open to engaging with
a range of new and existing industry- partnered projects, including health
design, social and interactive media, and community-based design for social
change.

Successful candidates for these positions will be exceptional emerging
scholars with demonstrated potential for becoming national and world
leaders in their area(s) of research. Candidates should have a strong
interest in working in a multi-disciplinary art and design environment,
experience with industry/community-engaged research practice, and
demonstrated excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Candidates should hold a PhD in their area of expertise, and should
have obtained their degree in the last 10 years.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a cover letter expressing your
interest in the position and providing a brief overview of your (3-5 year)
research plan, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and the names and
contact information of three references to:
