BSA Social Aspects of Death, Dying and Bereavement Study Group
CALL FOR PAPERS
Friday 15th November 2013, 10.30am - 4.30pm
BSA London Meeting Room, Imperial Wharf
Venue details can be found at: http://www.britsoc.co.uk/events/meetingroom.htm
Theme: Children and Death
How children are thought about, supported and engaged with when it comes to death, dying and bereavement is a growing area of concern and interest for those in policy, practice and academic worlds. Continuing from last year's theme on 'Death and the Family' this year's symposium will consider and problematize the relationship, involvement, and context of children in relation to death. At the symposium questions will be asked about the extent to which existing policy and practice, and academic theorising, applies to children. Through this we intend to add to understandings of death, dying and bereavement across time and space by critically exploring this sector of the population, further asking how the experience and viewpoint of children may challenge, or reaffirm, what we already know.
We invite papers that theoretically and empirically engage with the theme of this year's symposium. It is anticipated that topics covered by this call could include, but are not limited to: how children experience grief and bereavement; the death of children; demographic changes in children's deaths; paediatric palliative and end-of-life care; reproductive loss; memorialising children; concepts of vulnerability and protection; child bereavement support; media coverage; who is considered a 'child' in light of dying; children's concepts of death; death socialisation; and ethical and/or methodological issues of studying these areas.
Please send 250 word abstracts for 20 minute presentations to Erica Borgstrom and Kate Woodthorpe ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>).
Deadline for abstract submission is 5pm GMT Tuesday 10th September 2013.
