Hi Sarah (and MCGers)
We are actually launching a version of our 3D fossil database to the public this weekend at the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival. Please take a look at www.3d-fossils.ac.uk . It currently points towards our project page, but will be redirected to the 3D fossil portal by the weekend.
These 3D digital models (and images and anaglyphs) are generated by digitising specimens in the collections of the British Geological Survey and its project partners (National Museum Wales; The Sedgwick Museum, Cambridge; The University Museum of Natural History, Oxford; and the Geological Curators' Group, representing a number of regional museums).
However, the National Geoscience Data Centre (part of BGS/NERC) is also responsible for the archiving of 3D models produced by NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) funded work that are born digital - the Herefordshire Lagerstatte being an excellent example - see, for example, http://palaeo-electronica.org/2001_1/s2/s2.pdf .
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Sarah,
British Geological Survey are not strictly a museum, but they have curators, manage vast objects collections, and colossal datasets. They also work very closely with the geological museum sector.
They're are doing some interesting work in this area:

Subject: Knowledge Exchange - How widespread are RP objects in UK collections?
As part of the AHRC funded Material Migrations knowledge-exchange project ( http://www.designwithheritage.org/material-migrations/ ) we aim to create an overview of heritage institutions and galleries across the UK that presently hold 3D prints/rapid prototypes in their collections.
If you know of such collections, or have had some experience with the curation/preservation or digital borne objects we would welcome your experiences, insights and thoughts.
Many thanks, Sarah
