Well, you should definitely head across to the TEI site [1] and learn
about this well-established framework for developing interoperable
encoded textual resources.
It wold also be worth talking to the English departments of Newcastle
and Lancaster Universities, both of which have explored the encoding of
primary resources. Since you've asked the MCG list, I should also
mention the Wordsworth Trust, which has TEI-encoded manuscripts and
letters, sometimes in frightening detail. :-)
