Do you mean adding it as embedded metadata? You could use exiftool. It should be easy to write a script to add all your object identifiers from a list too.
There are a number of GUI options - Irfanview thumbnails, Microsoft Pro-photo tools, EXIFtool GUI. But I think with these I think you have to add identifiers one by one.
Also have you considered setting up your equipment to embed information on capture?
I would also suggest using the IPTC standard for your metadata.

Hi,
I am currently doing a digitisation project in a museum. I need to digitze all the museum's collections into images. Do you know anyone who is using free software to manipulate really simple image metadata . I want to attach copyright and object number into the metadata of our collection images. I was thinking of PhotoMe http://www.photome.de/, but I'm not sure if there are any other new boys in town?
