Hi,
We have used TeamLab (free) with great success after having used Ning (monthly charge). Works well with communicating with my teaching team and the students.
The University uses a platform based on Moodle, which also works well.

I would recommend Jomsocial with Joomla for a mature self hosted piece of software. We used Buddypress with a community site and would never do again.
