italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Grazie a tutti, for the many interesting and helpful responses I’ve received. It looks as if Petrarch rvf 120 is the terminus a quo, and that “fida scorta” appears as late as Tasso.
These minor poets also quote the phrase.
Scipione Castro (Tommaso mio, se il tormentoso affanno)
Giovanni Battista Amalteo ( Quegli occhi, Amor, che ti eran fide scorte)
Cornelio Bentivoglio d'Aragona (O troppo vaghe, e poco fide scorte)
It’s intriguing how a past participle came to acquire an active meaning, moving from seen/perceived to seer/watcher/perceiver.
Good wishes to all
Adam
