Please see below for a new ACE-funded post at the Freud Museum.

Anna Freud Project
Archivist (German speaking)

Based at Freud Museum, 20 Maresfield Gardens, London, NW3 5SX
www.freud.org.uk

Part-time 10 month contract: June 2013 – March 2014
Salary: £31,000 pro rata, 4 days a week (£24,800)
Reporting to: Curator

Job purpose
To be responsible for the arrangement, description, and preservation of all archival material relating to Anna Freud, which includes manuscripts and drafts, letters, photographs, patient information and other materials relating to the life and work of Anna Freud and the Freud family. The Museum currently has no archivist on its staff.

Background
The Freud Museum London is the final home of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis and his daughter Anna Freud. It opened to the public in 1986. Since the Museum launched its Development Plan in 2006, it has been steadily moving forward in order diversify and increase its audiences through improvements to interpretation, exhibitions, visitor services and programming.

Freud Museum Archives
The archives contain approximately 8,000 letters and over 1,000 miscellaneous documents. Many of these are copies, as a large number of original documents were transferred to the Library of Congress in Washington during the second half of the 20th century. The archives also include approximately 4,000 photographs. Most of the 170 prints are reproductions of works of art, probably souvenirs of Freud's travels. There are also around 2,000 press cuttings relating to the Freuds.

Anna Freud Project
In March 2013 the Museum was awarded funding from the Arts Council England to undertake a one-year project relating to Anna Freud who was a pioneer of child psychoanalysis and lived at Maresfield Gardens from 1938 until her death in 1982. The Project, which will be undertaken in partnership with the nearby Anna Freud Centre, has four key strands:

Collections: To consolidate the existing records and conduct research in order to complete the catalogue for collections and archival material relating to Anna Freud; to improve storage for these collections; to identify significant items for display; to photograph key items and make them available on the Museum’s website.

Interpretation: To re-develop the Anna Freud Room in order to present more engaging and relevant displays on her life and work in children’s development and mental health, her influence on education, healthcare and the law and her complex relationship with her father and others.

Artist in Residence: To host an artist to engage with the collections and support staff working on the redisplay, to contribute to the learning programme and develop their own work.

Learning: A specialist primary education freelancer will devise a new learning session and supporting resources, based on themes in Anna’s work and life.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• To survey, sort and appraise the Anna Freud Archive held by the Museum
• To catalogue and index the Archive according to national and international standards
• To ensure the long term preservation of the Archive through the proper repacking, storage and handling of the material as appropriate
• To liaise with freelance conservators where appropriate
• To assist with the digitisation of the Archive and to upload images onto Modes
• In collaboration with the Curator, liaise with the web designer and Modes staff regarding the launch of the Museum’s online catalogue, and subsequent snagging
• To manage the processes for the transcription of audio tapes and the digital transfer of audio-visual material in the collections, if necessary
• To help support the Anna Freud Project artist-in-residence and freelance education staff by providing access to relevant materials in the collection
• To attend and contribute to Anna Freud Room re-design meetings as required
• To respond to internal and public enquiries about the collection
• To contribute to quarterly reports and evaluation
• To advise on issues that arise, for example duplication of material, copyright, patient confidentiality
• To attend staff and other meetings as required
• To be committed to health and safety
• To promote equality and diversity in all aspects of your work
• To contribute to the Anna Freud Project as appropriate and undertake any other reasonable tasks as requested by the Curator or Acting Director

Key Outcomes

• Produce a catalogue of the Anna Freud archival material to ISAD(G) standard
• Devise the structure of the catalogue for the papers and create the numbering system, with awareness of the rest of the archives: largely Sigmund Freud papers held at the Museum and also material relating to the history of the Museum.
• Package the papers appropriately, and enter archival descriptions and indexing terms into Modes
• Ensure the papers are indexed using an appropriate Thesaurus as directed by the Curator
• Work with the Curator to prepare the archival material for digitisation and check the numbering is complete and accurate.

Person Specification

Essential

• Diploma/MA in Archive Studies
• At least three or four years’ experience with different cataloguing numbering schemes and able to demonstrate familiarity with archival listing and collections management software
• Very good written and spoken German
• Ability to work on your own and organise your work schedule in order to meet deadlines
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
• Excellent IT skills, including Excel, Access, and MS Outlook
• A good team player, with a flexible, positive outlook
• Willing to develop and accept challenges

• Interest in the history of psychoanalysis, Sigmund and Anna Freud
