*Short abstract*
The objective of this panel is to explore the subjective dimensions of
contemporary migrations. We would like to invite authors to explore, both
theoretically and ethnographically, the complex relations between migration
strategies, aspirations and expectations and structural conditions.
*Resumo Longo*
The objective of this panel is to explore the subjective dimensions of
contemporary migrations. We would like to invite authors to explore, both
theoretically and ethnographically, how migration strategies are intimately
associated with aspirations and expectations linked to life course projects
and the ways these change with time and according to structural conditions.
It is our contention, that these aspirations are frequently associated with
processes of flexible accumulation of capitals – symbolic, economic and
political – that imply a desire for “connection“ (Gardner 2012) or
"inclusion" (Piot 2012) in a “global socio-cultural order” (Ferguson 2006).
Such dynamics are not simply revealed in projects of escape from the
“countries of origin” but also during the migration experience *per
se, *leading
to persistent remigrations. Thus, in this panel we invite authors to
reflect on the relation between (i) aspirations, desires and expectations
(in relation to life styles, consumptions, “modernities”); (ii) structural
conditions (e.g. economic crisis and the impact in migrants economic
activities and subjectivities); and (iii) the investment in (re)migration
projects.
