medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: John Briggs <[log in to unmask]>
> Well, obviously, if they owe money they owe money!
tautologistically indisputable, Brother Briggs.
>They have either bought things and not yet paid for them, or they have
borrowed money.
it would seem from reading the archbishop's text that virtually every place he
visited "owed money."
i.e., virtually every ecclesiastical institution in the Province of Rouen was
living On the Cuff --St. Sulpice-sur-Risle is by no means exceptional in this
regard.
but, does such an interpretation make sense?
my question --one of my questions-- is: *to whom* did they owe all this
money?
i assume that they didn't owe "tithes" --a priory owed tithes?
i was under the impression that tithes were owed *to* an ecclesiastical
institution.
to whom would they owe tithes?
how could they owe 100 pounds in tithes (presumably per year) when their
yearly income was 250-300 pounds?
or was this the amount which was owed by the priory to the mother house (in
this case, St. Lomer of Blois)?
my first question --the easy one-- is, does "They have an income of 250 [or
300] pounds" mean that that is the total yearly income of the priory?
