Dates: 26-27 September 2013
Location: Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth, UK
Website: http://makingfutures.plymouthart.ac.uk
Deadline for submissions: 10 May 2013

The CALL FOR ABSTRACTS is now open and the closing date for receipt is 10th
May 2013. Making Futures invites submissions from artists, craftspeople,
designers, curators, historians, theorists, campaigners, activists, and
representatives from public and private institutions with an interest in
the relationship between contemporary craft practice, sustainability and
social issues.

Making Futures aims to investigate contemporary craft as a ’change agent’
within 21st century society – particularly in relation to global
environmental and sustainability issues, social equity and social
innovation practices. In doing so, it tries to explore whether these
imperatives present opportunities for the crafts to redefine and
reconstitute themselves as more centrally productive forces in society.

International Journal of Design – Special Issue on “Designing for
Subjective Wellbeing”<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2013/02/21/international-journal-of-design-special-issue-on-designing-for-subjective-wellbeing/>

FEBRUARY 21, 2013

Theme: *Designing for Subjective Wellbeing*
Website: http://www.ijdesign.org <http://www.ijdesign.org/>
Deadline for submissions: *1 March 2013*

*Possible themes include, but are not limited to:*

   - Theory, principles, and frameworks for wellbeing-driven design;
   - Tools, methods, approaches to wellbeing-driven design and the
   assessment of wellbeing impact of design;
   - Ethical, social, cultural, and commercial implications of
   wellbeing-driven design.

Besides long papers, we also invite short papers presenting original design
cases that illustrate opportunities and challenges of wellbeing-driven

*Call for papers:*

Wellbeing, someone’s enduring life appreciation, is emerging as a prominent
guiding principle for purposeful design. More and more designers find
inspiration in the idea that they have the ability to wilfully transform
conditions to stimulate the wellbeing of the people who engage with their
designs. This growing interest can be observed in the lively discussions on
topics such as empathic design, value-centred design, socially responsive
design, meaningful design, positive design, and happiness-driven design.
Although the variety of initiatives differs in approach and theoretical
underpinnings, they all express an aspiration to explore how design can
consciously contribute to the quality of life of individuals and

The interest in wellbeing is certainly not new: reflections on the
responsibility of designers to contribute to human flourishing can be found
throughout the history of design discourse. However, the topic has regained
urgency now that design has recently been embraced in several other
disciplines as a golden opportunity for dealing with major societal
challenges that require novel approaches. This development underlines a
growing need for an optimistic and possibility-driven yet pragmatic and
realistic perspective on the responsibility of designers. Therefore, we
believe it is an ideal time to examine the relationship between design and
subjective wellbeing.

Our focus is on the practical, scientific, economic, and ethical questions
involved in wellbeing-driven design. For example: should we, and can we
indeed generate the resources for people to interact with products,
services, systems, and environments with the key intention to improve their
wellbeing? If so, how? What knowledge of people and users is required, how
can this knowledge be acquired, and how can it inspire and direct creative
processes? What opportunities can be identified, and what are the main
challenges? How can we assess the wellbeing impact of existing designs and
new concepts? What business models are required to foster wellbeing-driven
design? Our aim is to provide a platform to initiate and structure the
dialogue on wellbeing-driven design. The overarching intention is to
cultivate and encourage wellbeing-driven design and design research. We are
seeking original papers that address both theoretical and/or practical
issues of wellbeing-driven design.

DRS 2014: Design’s Big Debates (June 2014, Umeå

FEBRUARY 8, 2013

Location: Umeå, Sweden
Dates: June 16-19, 2014
Website: http://drs2014.org
Deadline for submissions: 1 October 2013

Design Research Society’s 2014 conference invites you to engage in
discussions and debates on the future directions of design and design
research. We welcome you to join us in Umeå, Sweden, June 16-19.

We believe there is a shared discourse in design, one that includes all
areas of design research, and that is of vital importance for our
understanding and development of the foundations of design. This discourse
is something we share and cultivate over long periods time, as it tells
stories of past, present and future trajectories of design and its role in

With an ever-increasing demand for academic specialization and increasing
numbers of highly specialized conferences, there is now a bigger need than
ever for a venue where the design research community can address
significant challenges that cut across domains and big issues that will
influence the way our field as a whole develops. The main purpose of the
DRS 2014 conference is to foster and support a shared design discourse. By
focusing on key big issues in design, we want to create a forum where the
questions that have the potential to change the way we think and do design
– its philosophy, theory, practice, methodology, education, profession and
history – will be discussed and debated.

This conference is seeking to build on the growing base of research to

At the 1st CADMC in 2011, over 50 papers were presented, with an
international academic audience of 100 participants. 3 papers developed
from the conference will soon be published in Creativity and Innovation
Management Journal.

As in 2011, the conference will aim to support a high standard of academic
research and facilitate critical discussion in an open and friendly
atmosphere. At the 2013 conference, we aim to shorten the length of
individual research presentations in order to increase the level of
discussion, debate and interaction between presenters and the audience.
