Professor of Practice position in Screenwriting for Film and Television
The successful candidate will be appointed for a fixed 5-year term with the title of Professor of Practice. The position will begin 1.1.2014 or as agreed.
Aalto Professor of Practice system is intended especially for the fields of art, design and architecture but can be applied to other fields as well. The Professor of Practice position provides departments with the possibility to hire highly respected professionals for opening new areas of teaching and research/ artistic and professional work. The position also provides possibility for re-evaluation and dynamic development of a field.
The position is located at the Department of Film, Television and Scenography (ELO Film School Helsinki). ELO consists of two degree programmes. The Degree Programme in Film and Television provides teaching in seven areas of specialization: directing, screenwriting, film and television producing, film editing, cinematography, sound design, and documentary film-making. The Degree Programme in Design for Theatre, Film and Television offers three areas of specialization: production design, scenography and costume design. In addition, the Department provides teaching in the history of the cinema and courses in development of research skills. The Department provides an opportunity for pursuing doctoral degrees which include artistic elements. Issues arising from the artistic, aesthetic-philosophical or technical aspects of film-making or its production and scenography are at the heart of the practice-based research of the Department. The Department collaborates closely with the University of the Arts Helsinki and with other national and international higher education institutions specialized in arts. Professors of Practice are expected to exercise and guide scientific research and/or artistic activity, to provide education based on it, to follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field.
The Professor of Practice in Screenwriting for Film and Television will focus especially on developing and teaching methodologies in screenwriting. The purpose is to train students to become professional screenwriters and script editors. The professor is expected to maintain and create both national and international collaboration in the field: on artistic practice based level and/or research.
Professor of Practice is considered a professor position with Aalto-level requirements and external evaluation. Artistic qualifications that are comparable to a doctoral degree and significant expertise in teaching and/or research/artistic and professional work are required for obtaining Professor of Practice position. Doctoral degree is not required but it is an advantage. Furthermore, a commitment to develop the field through research/artistic and professional work and teaching activities is necessitated.
Artistic merits will be emphasized in the selection process: the applicant is expected to have significant artistic qualifications, good knowledge of theories of screenwriting and wide practical experience in the field.
The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of the following areas: artistic merits, teaching, research, co-operative skills and activity and leadership in artistic or academic community.
Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.
