Responsibilities:

*Parsons The New School for Design*, a division of The New School, seeks
applicants for an assistant professor rank on a renewable term appointment
in the School of Fashion.


Applicants should demonstrate expertise in the practice, history and theory
of fashion design while also being able to engage with students and
colleagues across a range of disciplines. Applicants should demonstrate
innovative pedagogical approaches to activating students’ interest in all
aspects of fashion and be forward thinking about what skills or literacies
are now required to respond to complex 21st century global conditions.


The successful candidate will have an earned bachelor’s degree in a field
related to fashion or significant industry experience that directly relates
to the teaching and study of fashion. They will demonstrate potential to be
strong in teaching, research, and scholarship. An MFA is desirable although
not essential and the candidate will have an established record of
professional accomplishments. An educational background or equivalent
experience in fashion marketing/business is desirable.


The post will be located in the School of Fashion and involves academic
responsibilities relating to a significant area of course provision,
involving a faculty team across a range of activities. The Assistant
Professor is expected to teach across a range of programs within the School
of Fashion, 5 courses per year or equivalent, to both graduate and
undergraduate students, hold regular office hours for students and
colleagues, and participate in other classroom and extracurricular
activities on a regular basis (e.g., critiques, juries, review panels,
thesis supervision, independent study, advising, internship supervision,
program citizenship, Parsons/New School committees, etc.). The Assistant
Professor is expected to be current in their field.


Responsibilities
- To make a significant contribution to creative academic curriculum
through delivery and planning for the School working with the Dean, the
Director of Academic Affairs, and other faculty.
- Teach fashion design students across a variety of courses within the
School of
Fashion as part of an established faculty team.
- Undertake appropriate research, scholarship, creative practice and
faculty development to ensure subject knowledge remains abreast of current
practices.
- To be self-motivated and entrepreneurial as well as an eager team member.
To seek out opportunities to share their expertise and research and to
engage with other faculty and students across the school, the university
and externally with the industry.
- To participate in school and institutional committees and working groups
fully and effectively, offering significant input.
- The post holder will be expected to undertake other responsibilities and
tasks as reasonably requested by the Dean/Operations/DAA/Program Directors.
 Minimum Qualifications:

- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in fashion (or related field), or
demonstrated equivalence in the Fashion industry. MFA or equivalent
professional qualification is preferred but not required.
- 1-3 years teaching experience at the university level.
- A proven track record of working well with people from diverse cultural
backgrounds, professional training and aesthetic sensibilities.
- Ability to develop and nurture individual student’s design abilities and
a strong commitment to progressive design education
- Demonstrated interest in developing critical, historical, and theoretical
discussions around Fashion in the classroom/studio.
- Active/current professional practice or experimental creative/critical
scholarship, with up to date experience of the field or industry.
- An interest in working collaboratively within Parsons, the New School
University, and with external partners towards the development of shared
projects and initiatives.
- Thorough knowledge of the global industry of fashion design, ideally with
a minimum of three to five years work experience with a leading company in
the field.
- Experience in garment construction, of materials, processes and
equipment; and abreast of new technological developments to enhance
students learning experience.
- Understands and explains technical/specialist terms commonly in use in
own area of work, conveying information of a complex, conceptual and
specialist nature adapting communication and media to suit the audience.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability
to meet deadlines, and motivate effectively, as well as challenge
appropriately and effectively.
- Proven excellence in all levels of communication, including but not
limited to students, colleagues, and management.
