> Two design research positions are available at the University of Cambridge working with Dr Nathan Crilly in the Engineering Design Centre. One position is for a post-doctoral researcher (Research Assistant/Associate) and one is for a doctoral research student (PhD Studentship). Both positions are associated with a project funded by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council with the aim of determining how design methods can enable innovation within emerging technologies. The project is highly interdisciplinary, studying the design principles that apply across many different kinds of system, including technical systems, biological systems and social systems.

> The IdEAS project is funded by the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council with the aim of determining how design methods can enable innovation within emerging technologies. A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate to work on the project, developing a framework of design principles (e.g. modularity, redundancy, scalability, resilience, etc.) that apply to many different types of system (mechanical, computational, biological, organisational, etc.). The work will require (1) identifying and relating the different design principles, and (2) studying how they are employed in different types of system. The research methods to be used include literature reviews (across multiple disciplines), expert interviews and industry case studies.

> The interdisciplinary nature of the project means that applicants from a broad range of backgrounds will be considered. Candidates should be in possession of a doctoral degree (or be in the final stages of obtaining one) and should have established a strong publication record. Preference will be given to those candidates who can demonstrate a systems focus, an aptitude for conceptual work and the confidence to network within academic and commercial organisations. The project provides a budget for the team members to undertake training relevant to the research and for their career development. There is also a budget for conference expenses and travel to visit/host project partners at the University of Bristol (UK), Technical University of Delft (Netherlands) and Simon Fraser University (Canada). Other partners will be identified during the project.

> The position is available for a duration of two years, with the possibility of extension for up to three further years. The successful applicant is expected to commence work on the project on 1st September 2013. There is some scope for flexibility on the start date, but a later start may reduce the contract duration. The salary range for Research Associates is £27,854 - £36,298, and the salary range for Research Assistants is £24,049 - £27,047.

To apply, complete form CHRIS /6 available at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/ and send with your CV, full publication list and covering letter (explaining in detail what you would offer the project) to Dr Nathan Crilly, Department of Engineering, Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1PZ, (Tel +44 01223 748244, email [log in to unmask])

> One of the features of emerging technologies is the level of uncertainty that surrounds their development and their application (uncertain development schedules, technical performance, market demand, etc.). Another feature of emerging technologies is the number of different system types from which those technologies are composed or with which they interact (mechanical, computational, biological, etc.). The project involves studying the sources of uncertainty that affect design and the approaches that can be taken to address those uncertainties (modularity, redundancy, etc.). The project will consider a range of design disciplines or system types so that the connections and contrasts between different domains can be identified. The research methods to be used are expected to include literature reviews, expert interviews and industry case studies, but other methods might also be applicable.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) a first class degree or equivalent. Preference will be given to those candidates who can demonstrate an aptitude for conceptual work and the confidence to network within academic and commercial organisations. Applicants from the UK are eligible for a full award: full University and College fees and a maintenance allowance of at least £13,590 per year. Applicants from the EU are eligible for a fees-only award. Applicants from overseas are not eligible for this studentship and should not apply. Further details of the project are available from the project website: https://www-edc.eng.cam.ac.uk/projects/ideas/
