Dear All,
This year in 20-25th of April, we are organizing the second of an
international workshop series 'Vernal Workshops' in İstanbul Bilgi
University.
These workshops brings together a number of key professionals, artists and
academics working in the realm of art, design and architecture. We aim to
foster an interdisciplinary exchange and production within an international
platform. Students from different universities and divisions (product
design, architecture, interior design, fine arts,...) apply for the
workshops. Approximately 20 students in each workshop work individually or
collectively with an hands on approach.
Last year's conceptual framework was 'Imperfection' in connection with the
theme of the İstanbul Design Biennial. Five parallel
workshops<http://vernal.bilgi.edu.tr/?page_id=81>were successfully
conducted by professional designers, scholars, architects
and artists, and the outcomes were
exhibitied<http://www.flickr.com/photos/64128912@N00/sets/72157631789770685/>
in
the Design Biennial.
This year the conceptual framework is defined as 'familiarity'. This may
range from the familiarity of designed 'things' (objects, interiors,
buildings, spaces) to more intangible concepts such as tradition, crafts,
values and rituals. Also, the degree/type of familiarity can be fluctuating
from a personal/physical connection to a more collective/psychologic one. Thus,
the workshop may refer to one or more of these notions. Of course, the
approach should not necessarily be affirmative and might explore different
connections such as unfamiliarity, estrangement, disconnection and
alienation.
Workshop leaders are paid a 1000 euro honorarium, the travel and
accommodation expenses are covered as well as costs of material and
production. The workshops will be followed with an exhibition and
publication.
If you are interested in the topic and would like to lead a workshop,
please apply with a shot bio and workshop definition (max. 500 words) until
25th of March.
PS: You can shortly reply to this e-mail first to get in touch.
Best Regards
