CALL FOR PAPERS
‘THE PUBLIC IMAGE’ - International Visual Sociology Association 2013 Annual Conference
The International Visual Sociology Association 2013 Annual Conference will take place from 8 to 10 July 2013 at Goldsmiths, University of London.
We are inviting visual sociologists and related scholars, including independent scholars and other visual practitioners, to submit proposals for papers in one of the conference panels.
Abstracts of 250 words maximum should be sent directly to panel chairs as indicated in the call. The deadline for submitting paper abstracts is 31st March 2013.
Conference Theme
Inspired by Michael Burawoy’s concept of “public sociology”, the 2013 IVSA conference is dedicated to the concept of the “public image”, and the ways that visual sociology can meet Burawoy’s challenge to bring a sociological understanding of social life to a vibrant, active and diverse public. Public sociology endeavors to bring sociology into dialogue with audiences beyond the academy, an open dialogue in which both sides deepen their understanding of public issues. Submissions are sought for a wide range of panels, including:
· Visual Methodologies Revisited
· Visual Research in Education
· On Mapping
· The Aesthetics of Activism: Strategies of Visibility
· The Public Image of Social Disruption
· Visual/Sensory Sociology and Natural Environments
· Teaching Visual Sociology: Sharing Practices
· Seeing What We Shouldn’t - Moral Boundaries, Profane Images and Public Photography
· Comics and the Public Image
...and many more!
Find more details about the conference and the Call for Papers in the IVSA official website http://visualsociology.org/
As well as the parallel panel sessions, the conference will also include keynote and plenary addresses, walks, workshops, screenings, and more. The 2013 Rieger Award will be announced and celebrated during the meetings.
