Those interested in the portrayal of heroes in various media/periods may find this of interest, especially as there is a "listen online" possibility for those not able to attend in person. The conference is the start of a major project and one of the purposes is to broker interdisciplinary collaborations - so please feel welcome to circulate this notice and/or get in touch to join the post-conference mailing list.
HERCULES: A HERO FOR ALL AGES
University of Leeds: 24th - 26th June 2013
This international conference scoping the extent of Hercules' significance as a cultural figure brings together classical reception specialists, scholars from the fields of medieval and later European history, art history, literature and drama, and contemporary writers and artists. The varied programme (see http://www.leeds.ac.uk/arts/info/125177/hercules_conference_2013/2061/programme) includes papers on Hercules' appropriation by Christianity; emergence in the Renaissance as the type of virtue; role as political emblem; particular relevance in France and during the Victorian period; role as a hero for children; appearance in contemporary popular media from comic books to the modern Greek press; emigration to Australasia; re-working in versions of Sophokles' and Euripides' tragedies on Hercules' death and madness.
In addition to the usual variety of conference-attendance packages (whole conference, with/without accommodation, one-day), audio recordings of papers will be posted online after the conference in a secure area so that speakers and delegates will have the opportunity to listen to all the papers, even those in parallel sessions. Access will be available to all speakers and delegates attending the conference in person for the days of their attendance at no extra charge. Registration for Virtual Attendance (£35.00) is offered as an alternative to attending the conference in person and will provide access to the audio recordings and supporting materials. To find out more about this option, and listen to a sample, please go to http://www.leeds.ac.uk/arts/info/125177/hercules_conference_2013/2062/listen
