I think what you had was incorrect. Those variables are described here:
https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/LCG/Site-info_configuration_variables
CE_PHYSCPU: Total number of real CPUs/physical chips in the SubCluster
CE_LOGCPU: Total number of cores/hyperthreaded CPUs in the SubCluster
CE_SMPSIZE: the number of Logical CPUs (cores) of the WN in the SubCluster
So, I suspect you should have defined:
CE_PHYSCPU=6 # 3 machines with 2 CPUs each
CE_LOGCPU=24
CE_SMPSIZE=8
Now, if you add a significantly different machine, you would either need
to define a new subcluster with its own queue(s) - that would be clean,
or publish some practical approximation to get the important numbers
come out right. If your new machine has 8 CPUs with 4 cores each:
CE_PHYSCPU=14 # 3 machines with 2 CPUs each + 1 machine with 8 CPUs
CE_LOGCPU=56
CE_SMPSIZE=14 # (3*8 + 1*32)/4
However, here we are neglecting performance differences between cores
on the different machine types. You also need to check out these pages:
