Hi David,
I can't replicate the problem you describe - have you tried with a clean maven repository? (The default location is ~/.m2/repository; suggest simply renaming it to something else.)
The process does take a while as it downloads a fair amount in terms of dependencies, so can be greatly affected by network speed. In my case, it took around 4 minutes from start to finish with an empty repository.

How long did the build take you? I've pulled the latest svn export and running it on the IdP but it's not gone any further than this. For about 10/15mins so far...
