Call for participants / presenters: Urban housing in Mexico and South
Africa: Learning from comparison
Funded by SIID (Sheffield Institute for International Development) we
are hosting a one-day workshop at The University of Sheffield on the
7th June 2013 focusing on housing (very broadly) in Mexico and South
Africa and the comparisons between these cases (see further details
below).
Gareth Jones, LSE will be providing the keynote, and we have a mix of
researchers who have all recently worked in either context delivering
papers (Sarah Charlton, Charlotte Lemanski, Oyan Solana, Kamna Patel,
Gabriela Ibarra, Emma Morales ...).
We have space for one or two more presentations, and a lot of space
for participants who wish to attend but not present. We strongly
encourage PhD students (as well as staff) to attend and/or present.
There is no cost for attending, and lunch will be provided, but only
if you have booked onto the workshop in advance.
Please email Paula Meth if you are interested in attending, or if you
would like more information: [log in to unmask]
Proposed Workshop focus: This workshop will explore comparative themes
relating to housing in both Mexico and South Africa (SA) focusing on
the lived experiences, as well as the wider implications, of
state-subsidised housing. Both nations are among a small handful of
developing countries that have implemented a substantial
state-sponsored programme of housing provision, which has contributed
to extensive changes to the form and function of their cities (and
impacted on other housing forms). The programmes are quite different
from each other, but many similarities are evident (creation of new
housing stock in new neighbourhood developments, funding in the form
of a subsidy from the state and an emphasis on home ownership). Much
scholarly work on these programmes has focused on their funding, their
cost, the speed and quality of delivery and their location, but little
work exists which explores the post-construction, post-receipt
experience of the house, (i.e. the creation and use of a ‘home’) from
the perspective of its residents, as well as the wider impact on the
city (e.g. gentrification, relationship with gated communities etc.).
The workshop will focus discussion on these issues, considering
comparisons and differences between the two cases.
