In the year which marks both the 200th anniversary of the birth of Dr David Livingstone and the 60th Anniversary of Hillary’s and Tensing’s conquest of Everest, The Library and Archives Sub-committee is pleased to invite you to 'Exploring Archives'.
Stationers Company Archive Evenings aim to promote the value of archive collections to the scholarly researcher and amateur historian alike. This year we will explore the connections that exist between the collection of the
Royal Geographical Society, the John Murray Archive and the archives of the Stationers’ Company. We will also celebrate the Stationers’ long standing relationship with the Royal Marines. The event will offer an insight into the collections of people and institutions historically associated with the Stationers, either through the eyes of famous liverymen or the published works of great explorers.
Our initial interest was in the institutions’ publishing links with the Stationers, but as you will see, when we started looking deeper we found a myriad of fascinating historical stories and characters, all of which will intrigue and engage you. Exploring Archives exemplifies the excitement of historical discovery and opens up the amazing world of geo-graphical discovery revealed by the manuscripts and photographs of the Royal Geographical Society, the John Murray Archive and the archives of the Royal Marines and the Stationers.
The event will be introduced and chaired by liveryman Chris Woods, Director of the National Conservation Service.

Jamie Owen, Photography Library Manager of The Royal Geographical Society
David McClay, Senior Curator of the John Murray Archive
Ian Maine, Curator of the Royal Marines Museum
The Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) is a world leader in advancing geography and supporting its practitioners in the UK and across the world. They were also responsible for both the incorporation of the study of geography in schools at the turn of the 20th century and for the first university positions in the discipline.
