Statistician in Analytic Digital Commerce
Summit is one of the most extraordinary success stories of the UK’s
digital media industry.
It started in 2000 at HMP Wolds with the ambition of providing
businesses with highly-effective online marketing services supported by
a pioneering training and rehabilitation scheme for prisoners that would
lead to employment upon release.
In the succeeding twelve years, Summit has grown to 120 employees,
across four offices, and works with some of the biggest brands on the
high street.
This is an exciting opportunity in an area which is dynamic and with
high value and considerable potential. It will suit someone wishing to
make a career in statistics in a vibrant company with UK-leading
prospects in statistical management of digital commerce.
You will join a current Insight team comprising three statisticians, (at
PhD or MSc levels) and other staff with more client-facing roles. There
is an existing strong link with Durham University providing advice and
advanced technical input from a senior statistician.
The role will be to join the team which constructs and exploits
statistical models relating to Summit’s e-commerce management,
specifically paid search (PPC). This will involve the following:
• Familiarisation with Summit Media and its existing statistical models.
Understand company requirements for the management and analysis of
internet sales data.
• Helping to identify commercial opportunities through analysis and
exploitation of data.
• Analyse existing data and investigate factors likely to affect the
company’s management of digital commerce. Develop statistical models for
relevant factors.
• Analysis of customer behaviour while browsing the web to identify
factors relevant to purchasing behaviour.
• Test statistical models for applicability to new scenarios. Design of
live interventions to test hypotheses.
• Train non-statistical staff at Summit to use methodology created by
the statistics team, Help prepare user interfaces for the tools useable
by Summit Media staff.
• Help advise on technical sales material for use with potential
customers of the statistical methodology created.
• Document techniques and procedures for use within the company.
You will have at least an upper second class degree in Statistics, or
Mathematics with a high proportion of Statistics modules. A
postgraduate qualification (Diploma, MSc, PhD) in Statistics will
attract a higher salary.
You must have experience of statistical modelling and statistical
programming using a package such as R. Some training in probability
theory is essential. Exposure to regression methods is essential.
A part-time position is possible, depending on qualifications and
circumstances.
The company premises are on the outskirts of Kingston-upon-Hull. As
such, you must have the ability to travel independently. Possession of a
driving licence is useful but not required.
You should be familiar with software packages such as Microsoft Office
and Excel, and have some familiarity with internet applications.
Retail/online experience is desirable but not essential.
You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and
should be highly motivated and well organised. You must be prepared to
work with team members as well as individually. You must be able to work
to tight deadlines, driven by urgent client concerns.
Salary (from £22k) will depend on experience/qualifications. MSc and
PhD-level applicants, salary will be commensurate and we will expect
you to hit the ground running. If you are currently/ recently graduating
with a first degree, training and support will be provided and more time
allowed to adapt to the demands of the position.
