Research Assistant/Associate in Quantitative Analysis of NHS data
Salary Range: 
£28,200 - £31,250 per annum (Research Assistant) 
£28,200 - £40,720 per annum (Research Associate)
(Level of appointment will be dependent on qualifications and experience)
(Candidates with a PhD in a relevant field already awarded will start no lower than £32,100)

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with an MSc or equivalent (for appointment as Research Assistant), or a PhD or equivalent (for appointment as Research Associate) in Epidemiology, Statistics, Health Services Research or a closely related numerate discipline who is looking to develop their career as a health services researcher or statistician. The post focuses on quantitative analysis of real NHS data. You will join a team studying and developing measures of quality in healthcare provision led by Dr Alex Bottle, Senior Lecturer in Medical Statistics and Principal Investigator. The post is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and located at the Dr Foster Unit, which is led by Dr Paul Aylin, Clinical Reader in Epidemiology and Public Health. The Unit publishes widely in the academic press. Examples of our output include weekend hospital mortality, the impact of junior doctor changeovers, and variation in time to operation for hip fractures.

Using routine NHS hospital admissions data (Hospital Episode Statistics, HES) held and processed by the Unit, the post holder will derive a series of predictive models for mortality, unplanned readmission, unplanned re-operation and non-attendance in outpatients departments. There will be a focus on the interplay between these different outcomes. After adjusting for available casemix factors, we will determine the variation in outcome rates between hospitals to shed light on the performance of the NHS on these key measures.
	
There will be excellent opportunities to publish in peer-reviewed journals as much of the data preparation has been done. Outputs from the project will be of a methodological nature in terms of modelling approaches and of a practical nature in terms of measuring aspects of NHS performance and variations in care.

Applicants should have practical experience within a research environment and knowledge of research methods and basic statistical techniques including logistic regression.

This position is full-time and fixed term until 28 February 2014 and will be based at the Dr Foster Unit, Imperial College London, 12 Smithfield Street, London, EC1A 9LA and at the Charing Cross Campus, Hammersmith. The post is available immediately.
