Postdoctoral Researcher (or Doctoral Candidate) in Media Design
Aalto University is a new university with over a century of experience. Created from a high-profile merger between three leading universities in Finland – the Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and the University of Art and Design Helsinki – Aalto University opens up new possibilities for strong multidisciplinary education and research. The university has 20 000 students and a staff of 5 000 including 350 professors.
The former Aalto University School of Art and Design and the Department of Architecture of the School of Engineering have merged to form the School of Arts, Design and Architecture (ARTS). The new school combines design, media, architecture, film, art education and art.
The Arki research group in the Media Lab of Aalto ARTS invites applications for
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (or Doctoral Candidate) in Media Design
The position will be filled as soon as possible, but the starting date is negotiable. The assignment is for a maximum of three years.
Key Accountabilities and Qualifications
The postdoctoral researcher will be part of the Arki research group that studies the digitalization of everyday life, and the challenges and opportunities for design that this creates. The focus of Arki is in the co-evolution of digital technology and the practices of everyday life with a design perspective. Our work draws on experiences and practices of collaboration, participation and open modes of design and production. The name of the group, Arki, means “everyday life” in Finnish.
The changes in media environments and practices, audiovisual software platforms and open culture are important areas of interest for our research and design activities. For several years we have been involved in the development of consolidated European audiovisual archives and broadcast media resources, together with a large consortium of European universities, audiovisual archives and software partners.
We now have a position open for a researcher who has relevant expertise and a research interest in these areas, and is willing to take the main responsibility of our research and design contributions in the EUscreenXL project, a continuation of the EUscreen project (http://blog.euscreen.eu<http://blog.euscreen.eu/>), starting in March 2013. EUscreenXL aims at linking online content held by 22 leading audiovisual archives for public access and engagement on the EUscreen portal (http://euscreen.eu<http://euscreen.eu/>). The project seeks to promote and maximise awareness for a shared Pan-European audiovisual content policy among archives, heritage institutions and broadcasters across Europe and increase the online presence of digitised audiovisual heritage in Europeana, the European digital library (http://europeana.eu<http://europeana.eu/>). An important objective is to provide strategies for durable use of digital audiovisual heritage and raise awareness of historical television content for diverse groups of users.
Specifically, the researcher will be responsible of developing pilots for EUscreenXL collaboratively with end-user communities and other project partners. The role of the pilots we will be designing is to expand "the user base of audiovisual content on Europeana by defining and testing three user engagement pilots supporting the re-use of Europeana content among three target groups: general public, researchers; creative industries." Hence, our work will have a large impact on how people will actually be able to benefit from this development.
The project offers a fruitful platform and an existing active international community, giving the researcher an excellent opportunity to pursue research and design activities within audiovisual media and media practice design that extends also beyond the project plan.
The position requires research and design skills necessary for conducting collaborative design and development of digital tools and for carrying out the pilots. The successful candidate will have theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in order to work within an international context in an art and design based academic environment. We appreciate experience and track record of design research, participatory design, audiovisual media practices, the problematics of open culture, IPR, and memory institutions as well as high quality academic contributions. We value self-initiative, good management skills, a strong collaborative design and media portfolio and disposition for collaborative writing, research and design activities with other members of the research group.
We are primarily seeking a post-doctoral researcher (the Doctor’s degree preferably completed within the last five years), but encourage also doctoral candidates with highly relevant experience and research interest to apply. An applicant without a doctorate must possess a post-graduate study place in the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, or equivalent status in another university. The job is tied to the continuation of the 3-year project and a successful evaluation period.
