"To scale: gay and lesbian spaces in East Berlin, 1968-1989"
Josie McLellan (University of Bristol)
'Communist East Berlin was host to a surprisingly lively gay and lesbian
community. This paper will examine the networks of private houses,
cottaging sites, bars, and public spaces, which saw sex, sociability, and
state surveillance. It introduces the geographical term 'scale', and
suggests that it offers a useful way to analyse city life under state
socialism.'
