The inclusion of sustainability as one of Plymouth’s four key ambitions in its
new corporate strategy Plymouth 2020 underlines the university’s achievements
and aspirations in this key area. This is an agenda that is being recognised
increasingly in the HE sector and beyond, against a background of increasing
complexity, uncertainty and unsustainability facing global society, but also
affecting the quality of our graduates’ lives. A new book, 'The Sustainable
University', celebrates the work of 10 UK universities - including Plymouth - in
taking this work forward particularly with regard to whole institutional change
processes embracing learning and teaching methods, research, campus operations
and university and community collaboration. It also challenges the sector to
raise its game further in the light of rapid social, economic and ecological
change, and the opportunities that sustainability presents. In this symposium,
some of the books’ authors will present some of the themes of the book, and
invite discussion on the implications of the rich notion of the ‘sustainable
university’ and its possibility.
