Both workshops will be held at the Open University in April 2013 and will be facilitated by Professor of Health Care and qualitative research expert Rosaline Barbour.
IDENTIFYING AND INTERROGATING PATTERNING
Wednesday 24th April 2013
This workshop introduces the principles underpinning qualitative data analysis and outlines the similarities and differences involved in the range of approaches that characterize the main qualitative traditions. Taking thematic coding as its starting point, the workshop will equip participants to step beyond coding to develop and refine explanatory frameworks. It emphasizes the importance of interrogating patterning in data and seeking to explain similarities and differences identified.
USING THEORY IN QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS

Picking up where workshop 2 leaves off, this session concentrates on harnessing theory in qualitative data analysis. It will examine some of the common pitfalls and challenges associated with attempts to utilize theory to inform data analysis. While acknowledging the central role played by specific disciplinary concerns and theoretical persuasions, it will provide some overarching hints and analytical tools that can be employed to address a wide range of theoretical frameworks. It will provide concrete experience of the use of theoretical frameworks to interrogate data and the use of data to interrogate and refine theories.
These workshops are offered as stand-alone sessions or can be booked as a 2-day package. They are ideal for PhD Students in Social Sciences or Health Sciences, or for research active health care professionals, practitioners and researchers who are new to qualitative data analysis.
