In celebration of International Women’s Day, the NGender Seminar Series at the University of Sussex will be hosting a special session on Breast Cancer Awareness. We will screen the powerful and thought-provoking documentary film "Pink Ribbons, Inc." which will be followed by questions and answers between the public and an expert panel.
Breast cancer campaigns are all around us. Everything from marathons to bake sales are regularly organized to raise money for breast cancer. More and more companies have ‘pink ribbon products’ – teddy bears, perfume, and bras to name a few – with sales that allegedly result in donations to breast cancer programs and charities.
But who is really benefiting from all this pink paraphernalia? Where is the truth about women’s health and well-being in the discourse that accompanies promotions and fundraising? What about women’s rights to accurate and comprehensive information about their health and treatment options? Who is responsible for keeping the pink ribbon machinery alive? And who is responsible for regulating it?
These questions and others can be put to our experts. Confirmed panelists are Helen Lynn (Facilitator at Alliance for Cancer Prevention), Dr. Grazia de Michele (breast cancer patient and advocate), and Cathie Malhouitre (art director, designer, blogger, founder of ”Au sein de sa différence” [Within our differences]). Professor Gillian Bendelow (University of Sussex) will chair the session.
This event is partly funded by the University of Sussex Doctoral School Researcher Led Initiative Fund. Tickets are £3 to cover costs, on sale through Komedia Box Office.
