The Media, Communications and Cultural Studies Association Postgraduate Network (MeCCSA-PGN) invites submission of abstracts for its 10th Annual Postgraduate Conference to be held on the 2nd-3rd July 2013 at the University of East Anglia (Norwich). The conference is hosted by the school of Film, Television and Media Studies (FTM)<http://www.uea.ac.uk/film-television-media> in collaboration with other schools across the Faculty of Arts and Humanities<http://www.uea.ac.uk/hum>, media@uea<http://media.uea.ac.uk/>, and the East Anglian Film Archive<http://www.eafa.org.uk/>.
MeCCSA is the subject association for the field of media, communication and cultural studies in UK Higher Education. This interdisciplinary conference invites Masters and PhD students, as well as early stage postdoctoral researchers, to share their work on any topic relating to film and television, journalism, radio, photography, creative writing, cultural studies, publishing, interactive media, the web and related areas. Proposals from other disciplines that engage with media, communication or cultural practices are also welcome.
The conference coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the University of East Anglia<http://www.uea.ac.uk/50years> and embraces the heritage built upon the university’s founding principal of ‘Do Different’. To reflect this ethos, we are looking for a diverse range of presentation styles for submission. This can include formal papers (up to 20 minutes in length), posters, performances, practice research (such as films or multimedia), as well as shorter “lightning talk” papers (up to 7 minutes in length with a limited number of accompanying slides) and “speed geeking” (quick fire ideas with small group discussions). Panel proposals are also welcome with up to four presentations. The aim is to offer multiple platforms where postgraduates can present their research in alternative and engaging formats. Multiple submissions in different presentation formats will also be considered.
Abstracts of 50 – 100 words (for shorter presentations) and up to 200 words (for longer papers) should be sent no later than 15th March 2013 to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
Please include with your abstract:
• Format of presentation (e.g. 20 minute paper, performance, multimedia, “lightning talk”, “speed geeking” discussion)
• Your name, contact details, institutional affiliation and year of study;
• Title and topic of research, including method(s) used;
• Up to five keywords, which will help the reviewers classify your proposal;
• Technical requirements for the presentation;
• An indication of whether you also plan to submit a full-length article for the MeCCSA-PGN journal, Networking Knowledge.
For panels, we require a short description and rationale (up to 100 words), in addition to the abstracts for each of the papers (200 words each). For proposals involving practice research, please ensure that you send preview material (up to 5 minutes) with the abstract.
The conference will have a special emphasis on postgraduate training, and we plan to offer a diverse and extensive programme of workshops and seminars. We are now in the process of organising these, and would like to hear what sessions would be most useful to MeCCSA PGN members. Any suggestions can be posted in the conference Facebook<http://www.facebook.com/groups/109076385927409/> group, or sent to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
Information about registration, accommodation and travel is available on the conference website<http://www.uea.ac.uk/film-television-media/news-and-events/meccsa-network> and on the MeCCSA-PGN<http://www.meccsa.org.uk/postgraduate-network> site.
