Hi
Thanks to everyone for your responses. I've been overwhelmed - so much
so that I've been getting lots of 'your inbox is full' messages from my
IT Support department! This is obviously something that most of us have
been a bit fed up with at one time or another.
I got some really useful ideas from you and I'm currently investigating
the use of texting overdue notifications. I am also waiting to hear
whether my pleas to form a working group to tackle this problem will go
ahead.
Here is a summary of the most common methods for getting resources back:
* Withholding of certificates
* Blocking computer and library access
* Blocking graduation
* Debt collectors
* Loan stop using the library management system
* Amnesties
* Deposit system
* Clearing forms at the end of courses
* Phone calls to students
* Nagging!!!
* Messages sent via computer booking systems e.g. MyPC
* Student details sent to Finance department
* Learning contracts signed at the beginning of a course
* Involvement of student reps/unions
Take care

Subject: Getting overdue items back - without being able to employ the
usual methods of retrieval!
***Apologies for cross-posting***
Hi all
I wondered if I could ask for your advice and ideas? I'm currently
struggling to get overdue books back from students as I'm not allowed to
employ the usual methods of retrieval. These being:
* With holding course certificates (as these are not our
property I am told that we cannot with hold them)
* Blocking computer and library access (this causes a barrier to
learning)
* Debt collectors (this was stopped a few years ago due to the
cost)
* Deposit system (this is perceived as an administrative
nightmare and therefore hasn't been adopted)
At the moment my service seems to be haemorrhaging money due to the
costs of replacing books which are never returned. I'm meeting with the
College student services team to try to resolve this issue and it would
be useful to have some suggestions. If you can let me know what you do
apart from the options outlined above I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks
Carol
