Dear all,
on behalf of the Near Surface Geophysics Group of the Geological Society, I'd like to draw your attention to the upcoming meeting entitled "The application of geophysical methods in UK Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) risk management" to be held on the 5th December 2013.
A call for abstracts is now open and abstracts can be submitted online at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=nsgguxo2013
The deadline for abstract submission is 16th August 2013.
A description of the meeting and important contact details are provided below. Further details will be posted online soon at www.nsgg.org.uk.
Please forward these details to any colleagues who might be interesting in presenting at or attending this event.
Meeting Summary:
One of the main legacies of military activity in the UK is the continuing presence of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO). This could relate to enemy action, military training or historical disposal of ordnance, and as a result there is a risk of encountering UXO in many parts of the UK. Thousands of UXO items are recovered each year due to construction activity, ground works, surface erosion or planned clearance activity. Growing awareness of the risk by all stakeholders has led to increased demand for UXO risk management services, including desk-based studies, geophysical detection surveys, UXO intrusive investigation and disposal management.
This one day event will showcase the latest research and best practice being applied in UXO detection and classification in the UK, and demonstrate the influence of this work on overall UXO risk management. By providing a forum for discussing the capabilities of geophysical methods and the communication of results, the meeting will promote transparency and understanding among practitioners and clients.
Presentations and posters are sought focussing on the following general themes:
- Onshore (airborne and surface systems) UXO detection and characterisation;
- Offshore UXO detection and characterisation;
- Down borehole and probing UXO detection and characterisation.
We hope to attract high quality presentations relating to magnetic, electromagnetic and other methods of UXO detection. While the meeting will focus on UXO risk management in a UK context, presentations with non UK themes will also be welcomed as examples of best practice and/or related experiences and problems.
