Dear all,
I'm currently doing fieldwork in Marrakech, Morocco, with approx. 11 months left here. I'm currently in contact with two other anthropologists working in the country now, and each of them, like me, are attached to British universities. I wouldn't like to guess how many other anthropologists are working the country - 10? 100? 1000? - but I thought I'd make some effort to see if there's any appetite for some shared forum; a 'Anthropology and Morocco' mailing list, for example.
I ask since, for me at least, the messages back and forth and occasional meetings between myself and the two mentioned have been always interesting, and occasionally invaluable; so, perhaps anybody curious might email me with their thoughts, their interest, or some suggestions. Aside from any mutual benefits that might come from speaking together occasionally whilst working here, ten or so people in infrequent contact might make a future colloquium more likely (for one example of a benefit).
Lastly, I have thought a little on the wisdom of suggesting a group around Morocco, rather than, say, some theme, theory, or circumstance; given the political, social, economic (etc) variations across every country, why use national limits to bracket our work, or at least define working groups? Might not an all-women collective producing argan oil outside of Agadir have less in common than, say, an expat football team in Casablanca, than they would with women (or men) working in similarly collectivist circumstances in Algeria? I don't think I've really got a good answer, except that the obvious one that we can be on more than one mailing list.
I've, uh, strayed somewhat; if you'd like to get in contact with other anths. working in/on Morocco, initially via a message board / mailing list, get in touch.
Lastly, apologies in advance if there is such a group; all searches so far were fruitless, however.
