The Rehabilitation Studies Unit is an interdisciplinary research group within Sydney Medical School Northern. It conducts research and educational activities to assist people with injury related disability to recover optimally and to participate in society as fully as possible.
The New South Wales Motor Accidents Authority (MAA) is a statutory corporation established by the Motor Accidents Act 1988 and which continues to be constituted under the Motor Accidents Compensation Act 1999. The MAA is the regulator of the Compulsory Third Party (CTP) personal injury insurance scheme (the Scheme) for motor vehicles registered in NSW. The MAA is funded by a levy on CTP premiums.
Within the MAA the Injury Strategy Branch (IS) provides specialist expert advice, strategic leadership, policy development and project management services to the Motor Accidents Authority (MAA) on issues relevant to injury prevention, injury management and the assessment of injuries and health outcomes.
The MAA has provided funding for a two year post doctoral fellowship based at the Rehabilitation Studies Unit. The Fellow will be supervised by Professor Ian Cameron and will be an employee of the University of Sydney.
The MAA Fellowship activities are expected to be based around any of these themes:
* Understanding the determinants of outcomes following injury across the priority groups of whiplash, mild-moderate traumatic brain injury, orthopaedic injuries and psychological injury * Assessing risk factors for poor health and Scheme outcomes including projects to develop assessment tools / systems that could be used in the compensable environment * Identifying effective interventions which address risks earlier in the claims cycle to improve health and Scheme outcomes and may be interventions that are policy based or applied early after injury.
* Translating research into policy and clinical practice including projects that support evidence based practice across a range of disciplines.
To succeed in securing this fellowship you will need to demonstrate:
* a PhD (or evidence of near completion of such) and primary degree in a relevant area * expertise in a relevant related area, such as (but not limited to) epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, qualitative research, knowledge translation * an excellent track record in research relative to opportunity with reference to career stage * excellent writing skills and academic presentation skills * ability to work independently in an academic role * ability to work collaboratively with research and education stakeholders * an established ability to complete research projects within time and on budget with significant academic and research translation outputs * expertise in an area of research directly relevant to the MAA (desirable)
