Dear All
This is a debate for another list - the initial contact with allstat was
designed to be provoke discussion. Dorothy Middleton did not even
give her own opinion.
I hope we stop now before we start filling up inboxes.
Thank you.

> In my view, there is no case here because if anyone really need to verify someone else findings, then they should contact them (I believe that is why all authors have there email on their publications). It should also be noted that some authors (especially from africa) pay a fortune to get access to data and also have to pay for there work to be published, so why would they want to put up such data.
>
> This topic is a complex one, however, if u have an issue with a journal and need to verify the findings, then get the data (am sure people quote their sources) or contact the author
>
> Hence, according to Mark Elliot "Publication of the data will often be inappropriate for confidentiality reasons. Publication will not prevent fraud".

>>> It is appalling how many journals are still willing to publish
>>> research results while not providing a URL to the data underlying the research.
>>> Do I suspect in such instances that the author is lying?
> If you're talking about data acquired by the same researcher, no more so than if the data set _were_ published. Any even half competent liar would surely falsify the data anyway. Publication of a data set, or otherwise, is not a strong indication of veracity.
