CEH has extensive experience in providing spatial datasets and science outputs that underpin freshwater science within the UK, for example through the Flood Estimation Handbook and the National River Flow Archive. The CEH Water Programme requires a GIS / Web Service Developer to support this work, providing expertise in the production and dissemination of scientific information and data. The successful candidate will be expected to develop web services to provide access to data, information and tools within the organisation and to the wider scientific and public user communities. 

Main Duties
The primary roles of this post will be to:
•	Create and maintain web services using ArcGIS server 
•	Develop server side processing services for dynamic data analysis (e.g. catchment delineation, network analysis) and data visualisation
•	Contribute to scientific work within the Water Programme using GIS analysis tools
•	Develop and maintain portals for the consumption of web services and the display of scientific information, writing javascript and interacting with HTML / CSS, etc. 
•	Seek to apply OGC specifications to improve the interoperability and accessibility of freshwater spatial data across CEH and the user community
•	Work with developers and data managers within all disciplines across CEH to enhance the spatial data infrastructure of CEH’s Environmental Information Data Centre

Skills Required
The successful candidate for this post is required to have attained at least (1) a Masters degree (or equivalent) in GIS or web development and at least 2 years’ relevant experience, or (2) a good first degree in environmental science/engineering and at least 4 years experience. 

You should be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of either application development using a recognized GIS (e.g. ArcGIS) or other web application development with an analytical focus, which can be backed up with a portfolio of projects and outputs. 

You will have an aptitude for computer programming (e.g. Python, javascript, etc.) and strong numerical and analytical skills, likely to have been developed in an academic or engineering environment and.

You should have a good understanding of user interface design and data visualisation.

You should have strong interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills, for regular liaison with senior management and scientists. 

An interest in, and knowledge of, hydrology or the freshwater environment would be beneficial.
