Details of two surface ventilationg systems were investigated in Cleveland during the 1970's, although stricitly speaking not furnaces. In each case ventilation was induced for a sinking shaft by making a connection with the boiler plant chimney.
See 'The Cleveland Industrial Archaeologist No. 7' (1977), Esk Valley Mine. Also No. 9 and especially No. 11.
C.I.A. No. 13 (1981) describes Warren Moor Mine.
Both mines were commenced around 1870 but never completed.
