Regional Aesthetics: mapping British media
Call for Papers
Hugh Chignell, Kristin Skoog and Ieuan Franklin are developing a proposal for an edited collection of original chapters on the theme of regional aesthetics. The proposal is influenced by an earlier anthology;
Erik Hedling, Olof Hedling and Mats Jönsson, Eds. 2010, Regional Aesthetics: Locating Swedish Media, Stockholm: National Library of Sweden.
We are looking for new writing which connects the media and a sense of place. Influenced by the broader definition of media employed in Swedish scholarship we are interested in film, broadcasting, books, magazines, the internet, theatre, exhibitions and public events (and so on). We want to explore the communication of place, the influence of location and the idea of geographically located identity. This will be a book about British media and culture so we are interested in English, Welsh, Northern Irish and Scottish examples which may include themes such as class, devolution, the city/country border, landscape, cultural policy and local folk or popular art traditions.
Combined with this interest in the ‘media landscape’ or ‘cultural geography’ is our own concern with the need to place the media in its historical context and we will particularly welcome work broadly in the field of ‘media history’ as well as historically sensitive contemporary examples.
There is also clearly scope for the emotions here; nostalgia, pride, belonging, loss and other spatially located feelings.
We are looking for 20 chapters of about 6,000 words in length and accompanied by illustrations.
If you are interested in contributing please send us a 150-200 word outline of your chapter (to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>).
Deadline February 28th 2013.
We also have spare copies of Hedling et al (2010) if you would like to have one.
Best, Hugh
