Dear Adrian,
It only provides part of the answer, but I cannot recommend the Museum
of London's Information Policy Toolkit too highly - see
http://www.museuminfo-records.org.uk/toolkits/InformationPolicy.pdf.
Apologies if you know about it already, but I thought your question was
a good opportunity to bring it to the attention of the wider MCG
community.
Produced in the late stages of the MLA, I think this toolkit is one of
the great unsung outcomes of Renaissance, and I would really like to
encourage more people to engage with it. Had we the resources at the
moment, I would like Collections Trust to have taken it forward as the
companion to SPECTRUM for broader knowledge and information management.
What it essentially does is enable your museum to take a broad view of
the information resources you have, and then to develop policies for how
they will be managed, preserved, retained and used. It's a great tool
for getting organisation-wide buy-in to the process, which is essential
given that this information will sit in multiple silos across the
museum.
Hope this is useful, and I would love to hear from others who have
experience of using the toolkit.
All best,
Nick

Subject: How do you manage knowledge and information?
Hello all,
I'm currently thinking a lot about how we manage information and
knowledge.
We do this very well about our objects - as many of you do, we have a
database and all the information about objects is stored in here in a
variety of ways and formats.
I'm interested to know what you all do with other information - for
example:
- your organisation's history (either in simplified form or
very detailed)
- biographies of key curators and personalities
- macro-level information about individual collections within
the collections
- information about projects run in the organisation
(overviews, outcomes rather than day-to-day management)
- even anecdotal trivia or information about the organisation
How do you collate this information across the organisation? How do you
organise it?
Any information, examples or suggestions greatly received.
Regards,
Adrian
