Hello all
I'm currently trying to design a system for archiving digital video (and audio) assets as part of our collection. I would be interested to hear what experiences others have had in this area.
Primarily I'm attempting to design a process for losslessly storing current video assets as part of our collection. My task is choosing suitable codecs and encoding software to create digital video files that will be accessible in the long term.
Going on what I have been able to glean from sites such as http://www.digitalpreservation.gov/formats/, I have been investigating the use of open source software, in particular the command line encoder ffmpeg<http://ffmpeg.org>, to encode in the OpenJPEG<http://www.openjpeg.org/> codec, an open source implementation of JPEG2000. This codec has the benefit of being open-source, as well as being lossless. However the codec is still in the developmental stages and doesn't seem to produce acceptable results in the testing I've done. Also it's as slow as a wet week, not suitable for production work and not particularly space efficient. Even though storage is becoming cheaper all the time, there is still a need to consider the efficiency of the codec as the decrease in the cost of storage is matched by the increase in the data rate of digital video formats.
So I'm interested to know what solutions for long term storage of video (and audio, though it's not such a problem) that others have adopted. As well as container formats, codecs and transcoding software there is also the physical storage of the data to consider, and the systems needed to store metadata for the assets.
I'm coming at the problem from a background as a content creator (editor and animator), rather than a conservator or archivist, but as there is no-one in the organisation specifically charged with the task of maintaining the video assets that we have, I'm having to teach myself as I go.
Any advice would be most welcome.
