Essays on British Art Presented to Brian Allen
This volume of academic essays on 18th-century art is a gift to Brian Allen,
on the occasion of his retirement in 2012 after 36 years at the Paul Mellon
Centre for Studies in British Art, first as Librarian and then as Director
of Studies, from his colleagues past and present at the Paul Mellon Centre.
It assesses the excellence of his years of service to the field and
addresses subjects of scholarly inquiry that have received support through
the Mellon Centre's Senior Research Programme.
The volume includes essays on 18th-century Grand Tourists to Italy, Hogarth,
Richard Wilson's drawings, Reynolds and Gainsborough and views of Richmond
Hill, artists' studios in London in 1785, Romney's late paintings, J.M.W.
Turner, a biographical study of Joseph Burke, and a study of the
architecture of the Arsenal stadiums.
There are short personal tributes from Amy Meyers, Christopher White and
Jules David Prown. The other authors are John Ingamells, Duncan Robinson,
Elizabeth Einberg, Paul Spencer-Longhurst, Martin Postle, Hugh Belsey, Frank
Salmon, Alex Kidson, Eric Shanes, Patrick McCaughey and Steven Parissien.
