2012 has been the European Year for Active Aging and we have been running a programme of science activities for senior citizens, at the Pavilion of Knowledge, a science centre in Lisbon.
Every month we explore a different topic through interactive activities, experiments, workshops, visits to other museums as well as informal conversations with scientists. Some of the topics we have covered: Photography, Economics, Plants, Geology, Astronomy, Kitchen Science, Nanothecnology, among several others.
The project has so far been successful with seniors expressing a lot of interest. Most of them have gone to university, some in areas of science and education, so they already show a high level of interest in this type of activities; they are ready to do something different and eager to learn new things. However there is a large population of seniors in Lisbon that do not usually engage with science and I believe it would be interesting to work with them. Should we engage? Why and how? Has anyone developed projects with this particular audience in mind? How do we tie in usual science communication efforts to working with this audience? How do we ensure sustainability and lasting impacts of activities with this audience?
I look forward to hearing from anyone who has worked with this particular audience, what topics were explored, what opportunities and challenges you've encountered, what worked and what didn't, as well as lasting impacts of the project.
Many Thanks,
Claudia Velhas
