I ‘m glad to see some colleagues are interested in the current
situation of public libraries in my country.
In Japan, the professional librarian certification can be obtained in
214 universities and colleges by finishing the optional program for a
24 credits, which means around 300 hours training. The subjects of the
program are determined by the government. The certification is much
easier to obtain for university students than in UK or US.
Some universities also have LIS departments (not traditional library
school), as undergraduate or postgraduate degree programs. My
university, Keio University in Tokyo, is one of them.
