* PhD scholarships in German at the University of Edinburgh *
In 2013 the German section at the University of Edinburgh will be
nominating a candidate for a 3-year AHRC PhD scholarship in German
Studies. Candidates working on comparative topics involving German
Studies are also very welcome to apply. The closing date for
scholarship applications is 15 February 2013, and scholarship
candidates must have applied and been offered a place for PhD study at
Edinburgh by the end of February.
We also encourage prospective PhD students in German to apply for
scholarships in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures. The
School will be awarding 10 fully-funded scholarships at the Home/EU
rate, and overseas students are also welcome to apply. Students can
also apply for PhD studentships from the College of Humanities and
Social Sciences. The closing date for applications is 1 February 2013.
We are able to offer supervision on a very broad range of topics
including Medieval literature; German literature and mental health as
well as disability studies; theatre, film and censorship;
German-Jewish and German-Turkish writing; Holocaust writing and
translation; travel/migration writing and cultural exchange; and
gender and masculinity studies. Our innovative Edinburgh German
Yearbook, planned and edited within the section and published by
Camden House in the USA, attracts high-profile academic contributors
with their cutting-edge research. Postgraduates in German founded and
regularly edit the School's peer-reviewed postgraduate journal, Forum
(http://www.forumjournal.org/site/).
Edinburgh has excellent library resources, with access to the National
Library of Scotland - a copyright library - as well as the University
Library. The University has recently acquired the Karin McPherson
collection of GDR literature, which comprises some 1000 volumes and is
accessible for research purposes.
Our regular research seminars feature papers presented by Edinburgh
staff and postgraduate students as well as invited speakers from the
UK and abroad. Colleagues are increasingly involved in activities that
foster knowledge exchange between the University and the public. The
one-day symposium 'Making a Difference' at the Scottish Mental Health
Arts and Film Festival in Edinburgh brought together German, Scottish
and Irish filmmakers, writers and scholars as well as psychiatrists
and psychotherapists and led to fruitful exchange between these
disciplines. The film series 'The Stasi Are Among Us' featured at the
Glasgow Film Festival and was accompanied by discussions with East
German filmmakers on working under socialism in the GDR.
