There are some interesting comments on the representation of time in Scott McCloud's -Understanding Comics.-
For those of you who don't know the book, it's a 200 page comic book about how comics work. I have some quibbles with it, but I still think it's one of the more interesting books on visual communication of any sort (not just comics) around.
